Nikki Haley, former South Carolina governor and ambassador to the United Nations, will announce this month that she is seeking the Republican presidential nomination. Haley has been running fourth in early polls with about three percent support, behind Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, and Mike Pence.
Trump, meanwhile, has been off to a slow start, with sluggish fundraising in the first weeks since he officially entered the 2024 race. And though Trump has been leading national GOP polls, it’s DeSantis who is acting like the frontrunner, ignoring Trump’s attacks.
Number two Senate Republican John Thune says any candidate running in 2024 on the theme of “a stolen election” is going to have a hard time. That could apply to Trump, but also to GOP Senate candidates — which is why the National Republican Senatorial Committee is taking early steps to stop unelectable candidates.
President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy met today for the first time since McCarthy won the gavel. Raising the debt ceiling is on both men’s minds, and the White House is pondering a compromise — or an end-run around McCarthy.
